When you should amend a return
File Form 1040-X if something changed in your:
- Filing status
- Income, like a 1099 or crypto sale you left off
- Deductions or credits you missed
- Dependents
When you do not need to amend
- The IRS already fixed a math error and told you about it.
- The IRS accepted your return without a form, or asked you to send it. Just send the form.
- You only want a refund of penalties or interest you paid. That uses Form 843, not Form 1040-X.
How far back you can go for a refund
To get a refund, you generally must file the amended return within 3 years after you filed the original return, or within 2 years after you paid the tax, whichever is later. If you filed early, the 3 years count from the April deadline.
Example: for a 2023 return filed by April 15, 2024, the refund window generally closes on April 15, 2027. Some cases, like a federal disaster or a combat zone, can give you more time.
How to file Form 1040-X
- You send Form 1040-X together with a full corrected return for that year and any new or changed forms.
- You can e-file an amended return for the current tax year and the two years before it. Older years go on paper.
- You can e-file up to 3 amended returns for the same year.
- For tax years 2021 and later, an e-filed amended return can get its refund by direct deposit. A paper 1040-X gets a paper check.
- If the change means you owe more, pay as soon as you can to stop more interest.
How to check your amended return status
Use the IRS tool Where's My Amended Return, or call 866-464-2050. Your return shows up about 3 weeks after you send it. You can check the current year and up to 3 years before. You need your Social Security number, date of birth and ZIP code.
The tool shows 3 steps:
- Received: the IRS has your amended return and is working on it.
- Adjusted: the IRS made a change to your account. It can mean a refund, a balance due or no change.
- Completed: processing is done. The IRS mails you the details.
How long an amended return takes
The IRS says to allow 8 to 12 weeks. Some take up to 16 weeks. It can take longer if the return has errors, is missing a signature, includes an injured spouse form, or needs an identity theft review.
The tool cannot show business returns, injured spouse claims, carryback claims, or a Form 1040 marked "amended" instead of a real Form 1040-X.
Still waiting on your first refund?
You can still amend. The IRS sends any extra refund from the 1040-X separately from the refund on your original return. Many people wait until the first return is fully processed, so the two do not get mixed up.
What about Florida?
Florida has no state personal income tax, so there is no Florida income tax return to fix. If you lived or worked in another state that year and filed a return there, that state return may need a fix too.
