Questions and answers

What is an ITIN?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is a nine digit number the IRS issues to people who must have a U.S. taxpayer number for federal tax purposes but do not have and are not eligible for a Social Security number. It is for federal taxes only.

Does an ITIN give me work authorization or a Social Security number?

No. The IRS says an ITIN does not entitle you to Social Security benefits and does not change your immigration status or your right to work in the United States.

Which documents do I need for Form W-7?

A valid passport is the only stand-alone document. Without one you need at least two current documents that prove identity and foreign status, and one must have your photo. They must be originals or copies issued and sealed by the issuing agency.

How long does it take to get an ITIN?

The IRS says to allow about 7 weeks to hear back, and 9 to 11 weeks if you apply from January 15 through April 30 or from overseas. You also cannot e-file a return with an ITIN in the same calendar year it is assigned.
