Questions and answers
What counts as gross income for this test?
The IRS says gross income is all income you receive in money, goods, property and services that is not exempt from tax. It includes income from outside the United States. For business income it is your receipts, and you do not subtract losses.
Should I file even if the chart says I do not have to?
Often yes. The IRS says you should file if you can get money back, for example if tax was withheld from your pay, you made estimated payments, or you qualify for credits such as the earned income credit or the additional child tax credit.
Does self-employment income change the answer?
Yes. The IRS says you must file if you had net earnings from self-employment of at least $400, even when your income is below the chart amount.
Why does this say tax year 2025?
Returns for tax year 2025 are the latest the IRS has published filing amounts for in Publication 501. The 2026 amounts will be published later. We label the year on every result so you can check the one you need.
